Me and my rice cooker a 20 yr enduring love affair

My rice cooker is probably the one thing in the kitchen I have that is almost like an extension of me, like an extra arm or something, meaning it has been with me for so long I cannot imagine living without it. One of the things I remember most about the kitchen growing up was the almost daily ritual of washing the rice by hand and then literally using your finger to measure how much water you had to put in the rice cooker-- a kitchen rule from my mum that has been trusty for twenty years now at least...

Being of Chinese origin, there have been a number of times over the years where friends have assumed I could cook rice in a saucepan to perfection. And when they asked me to do it, I would literally break into a sweat and start panicking. How much water? What heat on the stove? How long for? Just too many variables. And more often than not, the end result would be a gluggy mess that also meant fun washing up a saucepan full of rice stuck to the bottom. And so has been my dependency on my trusty, wonderful rice cooker. Always cooked pretty much spot on, no fuss. Rice lovers, purchase one of these and you won't look back.
